Noble metal nanoclusters (NCs), in the size regime where each atom counts, exhibit extraordinary optical properties, significantly influenced by the number and type of metal core atoms or protecting ligands. Their molecule-like behaviour and discrete electronic structure together with the possibility of versatile control over their chemical synthesis are attracting a growing attention. Nevertheless, the correlation between their optical properties and well-defined structures is still not fully understood and hence it is the topic of our research work. We are particularly interested in characteristics of NCs which are favourable for applications in bioimaging and medicine.
